Description
Our computers, cell-phones, and handheld devices contain precious minerals which
are sourced from conflict areas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where a war
has been raging for the past 12 years. Learn about the atrocities happening in the Congo
and how companies, civil society organizations, and social investors are working
together to ensure these devices are not fueling the violence.
Speaker Biographies
Patricia Jurewicz is the Director of the Responsible Sourcing Network,
a project of As You Sow. Prior to joining As You Sow, she directed the Global Cooperation
Project at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) where her work focused on
raising awareness for multilateral diplomacy, promoting fair trade, and supporting social
development. She co-authored a report entitled, "The Treaty Database: U.S. Compliance
with Global Treaties." Prior to IATP, Patricia was at Gap, Inc. located in the Americas
Sourcing Office. She is fluent in Spanish and has a background in Latino political
outreach and working with women's craft cooperatives in Latin America.
Maurice Carney is co-founder and Executive Director
of the Friends of the Congo. He is an independent entrepreneur and human rights
activist who has fought with Congolese for fifteen years in their struggle for human
dignity and control of their country. He has worked as a research analyst at the
nation's leading Black think tank the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.
While at the Joint Center, Maurice worked with civic associations in West Africa
providing training on research methodology and survey. He served as the interim
Africa working group coordinator for Reverend Jesse Jackson while he was
Special Envoy to Africa. Maurice also worked as a research consultant to the
Congressional Black Caucus Foundation addressing issues such as the
socio-political condition of African American communities.
Lauren Compere, Senior Vice President/Director of Shareholder
Engagement, Boston Common Asset Management. Lauren is responsible for working
with clients invested in Boston Common subadvisory strategies and has day-to-day
oversight of Boston Common’s sub-advisory relationships. Lauren also coordinates
Boston Common’s international shareholder engagement initiatives and has over
20 years of experience in the SRI field. Lauren served as the Co-Chair of the
Access to Health Working Group (2005-2008) and the Human Trafficking
subcommittee (2006-2008) of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility
(ICCR). She is currently Co-Chair of the Social Investment Forum’s International
Working Group and the Emerging Markets Disclosure Project.
Jerry Meyers PhD, Materials Program Manager, Intel Corporation. Jerry works in the
environmental department of Intel's materials procurement organization. He has been with Intel for 14 years and spent 10 years
working in Intel's Technology Development department for microprocessors. Jerry is currently in charge of Intel's program for
understanding the material supply chains regarding conflict metals. He is also co-chair of the EICC/GeSI Extractives Industry WG.

Webinar, February 24, 2010: "Taking Responsibility for E-Waste Recycling" with Robert Tonetti, General Manager of UNICOR

Bob Tonetti became General Manager of the Recycling Group at UNICOR, Federal Bureau of Prisons, in spring 2009. At UNICOR, Bob is responsible for the vocational training and inmate employment program involving electronics refurbishment and recycling. Prior to UNICOR, Bob spent 32 years in EPA’s Office of Solid Waste in Washington, DC, where his focus for 8 years was on the environmentally sound reuse and recycling of used and scrap electronics. Bob developed the guidelines under EPA's Plug-In to eCycling program for the sound management of e-waste and was the lead author of international guidelines on the reuse and recycling of computers for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). He also led guideline development efforts under the Basel Convention partnership program. Bob has been involved with the development of many of EPA’s regulations under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. It is this U.S. and international environmental regulatory and policy experience that he brings to his new position as General Manager of UNICOR’s recycling program.
